The Sex and the City 3 reboot was recently confirmed and we were all absolutely giddy for some classic 90s nostalgia – until we found out our favourite character would be missing.
And Just Like That will be a 10-episode series revisiting the iconic SATC characters 20 years on, and production is due to begin in the spring for HBO Max.
News of the reunion first emerged at the end of December, when Page Six claimed that HBO Max was considering a new limited series. And then Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie Bradshaw), Cynthia Nixon (Miranda Hobbes) and Kristin Davis (Charlotte York) confirmed the news by posting on social media.
However, Kim Cattrall – who plays sex-hungry PR guru Samantha Jones – will not be returning to take part in the new limited series.
So what else do we know about the upcoming reboot? Here’s our ultimate breakdown…
What is the reboot called?
The series is ditching the ‘Sex and the City’ name that we know and love and the reboot, which takes a line from narrator Carrie herself, is titled And Just Like That.
When and where will Sex and the city 3 air?
According to Variety, the series will begin filming in Spring and will be made up of 10 half-hour episodes. It will air on HBO Max but we are yet to find out when. Patience is a virtue, people.
Why isn’t Samantha returning to SATC?
Cattrall appears to have thrown shade at her former cast mates. While she’s yet to issue a statement or openly acknowledge the reunion, she has just liked a tweet from a fan that ‘applauded’ her decision to ‘put herself first’.
The tweet read: “I absolutely love Sex and the City and whilst I am saddened that Samantha will not return, I applaud doing what is best for you and think this is great example of putting yourself first. Well done @KimCattrall.'”
It’s confirmed, folks. A reboot of the Sex and the City is in production. 2021 couldn’t get any better.
Back in December, during an interview with the Women’s Prize For Fiction Podcast, Cattrall told host Zing Tsjeng: “I remember getting a lot of grief on social media for not wanting to do a film. And that was astonishing.
“I am lucky enough to have a choice… And it’s, it’s something that I feel very lucky to have. And I’m very protective of it. But I wouldn’t be any good doing something that I really didn’t want to do.”
While HBO have not commented on why Cattrall will not be returning, many have speculated that it’s due to past tension with co-star SJP.
When Cattrall’s brother died in 2018, she publicly hit out at her former co-star, saying she “didn’t need her love and support” and that she was a “hypocrite”.
Cattrall wrote: “Let me make this VERY clear. (If I haven’t already) You are not my family. You are not my friend.
“So I’m writing to tell you one last time to stop exploiting our tragedy in order to restore your ‘nice girl’ persona.”
She then included a link to a New York Post article entitled: “Inside the mean-girls culture that destroyed Sex and the City.”
Ouch.
How will Samantha be written out of the show?
The absence of Cattrall’s character will see art imitating life, a show boss has hinted.
HBO’s Casey Bloys has hinted that the show will reveal how Samantha Jones has drifted apart from her former friends, which is pretty true to Cattral’s friendship with the girls IRL.
What will happen in the reboot?
According to IMDb, the show will follow the three friends “as they navigate the journey from the complicated reality of life and friendship in their 30s to the even more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50s.”

Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content at HBO Max, said: “I grew up with these characters, and I can’t wait to see how their story has evolved in this new chapter, with the honesty, poignancy, humour and the beloved city that has always defined them.”
Is there a trailer for Sex and the city 3?
There is no official trailer for Sex and the city 3 as of yet, however, Sarah Jessica Parker shared this teaser video on her Instagram.
